Detective Comics #27 is a comic book issue published by National Allied Publications, the company that became DC Comics, cover-dated May 1939, containing the first published appearance of Batman in a story credited to Bob Kane and, though uncredited on the original issue, largely written by Bill Finger. The issue introduced the character as a costumed vigilante detective with no superhuman powers, a departure from the already-established Superman template of a super-powered hero. Detective Comics #27 is widely regarded as one of the most historically significant and financially valuable comic books ever published, owing to Batman's subsequent status as one of the most enduring characters in American comics.
