Maus is a graphic novel by Art Spiegelman, serialized from 1980 to 1991, recounting his father Vladek's experience as a Polish Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. It depicts Jews as mice, Germans as cats and Poles as pigs, and moves between two timelines, a framing story of Spiegelman interviewing his father in New York in 1978 and 1979 and a historical narrative following the family from the years before World War II through their eventual liberation from Nazi concentration camps. In 1992 Maus became the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize, receiving a Special Award in Letters, a milestone widely credited with establishing that comics could carry the same weight of literary and artistic achievement as prose, and it remains one of the most widely taught works of Holocaust literature.

Was Maus awarded a regular Pulitzer Prize category?
No. It was a 1992 Pulitzer special citation.
No. The Pulitzer Prizes site lists Art Spiegelman for Maus as the 1992 winner in Special Citations and Awards, which is separate from the regular prize categories. That is why the honor is described as a special award rather than a win in a category such as fiction or history.
