The Last Laugh, released in Germany as Der letzte Mann, is a 1924 German silent film directed by F. W. Murnau, following an aging hotel doorman who is demoted to washroom attendant and struggles with the loss of the social status his uniform once gave him. The film is built almost entirely around visual storytelling, using only a single intertitle across its whole running time, and pioneered what became known as the unchained camera, moving the camera fluidly through space and even strapping it to the cinematographer to render subjective, disorienting points of view. Murnau's technique in The Last Laugh is widely credited by film historians with helping establish cinema's own visual grammar independent of stage-derived intertitles, and it influenced later filmmakers including Alfred Hitchcock.
