The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, loosely adapted from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name. It follows Ariel, a teenage mermaid princess who falls in love with the human Prince Eric and bargains with the sea witch Ursula to become human, risking becoming Ursula's property if she cannot win Eric's love within three days. The film is widely credited with reviving Walt Disney Feature Animation after two decades of decline, launching what became known as the Disney Renaissance, and it won the Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song while establishing the Broadway-style musical format that defined Disney's animated features for years afterward.
