Carrie (1976 film)

Carrie is a 1976 American supernatural horror film directed by Brian De Palma from a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen, adapted from Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same name, the first of more than one hundred film, television and theater productions based on King's published work. It stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a shy teenage girl constantly mocked and bullied at school who develops the power of telekinesis and uses it to take vengeance on her tormentors, with Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt, P.J. Soles, Betty Buckley and John Travolta in supporting roles. Released theatrically on November 3, 1976 by United Artists, it was a critical and commercial success, grossing over 33.8 million dollars against a 1.8 million dollar budget, and earned two Academy Award nominations, for Best Actress for Spacek and Best Supporting Actress for Laurie. Widely regarded as the best film adaptation among the many productions based on the novel and as one of the greatest horror films ever made, in 2022 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
