Captain America Comics #1

Captain America Comics #1 is a comic book published by Timely Comics, carrying a March 1941 cover date but going on sale December 20, 1940, roughly a year before the United States entered the Second World War. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, who drew its cover, the issue introduced Captain America with an image of the hero punching Adolf Hitler, a deliberately political statement Simon later said was meant to answer the war's well organized opponents. The debut issue sold nearly one million copies, an extraordinary figure for the period, and Captain America went on to become the most prominent patriotic superhero of the wartime era, launched directly into his own title rather than debuting first in an anthology.
