Cairo Station is a 1958 Egyptian film directed by Youssef Chahine, in which a disabled newspaper vendor working in Cairo's main railway station develops a dangerous obsession with a young refreshments seller, set against a backdrop of a serial killer's spree through the station. Blending Italian neorealism with elements of film noir, the film addressed urban working class struggle, sexual repression and violence against women at a time when Egyptian cinema rarely tackled such themes directly, and it provoked outrage on its first release. Its reputation was reassessed beginning in the 1970s, and it is now widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of Egyptian and Arab cinema, made before the 1966 nationalization of the Egyptian film industry narrowed the range of subjects filmmakers could address.
