Brave is a 2012 computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, set in a mythic medieval Scotland, following Princess Merida, an unconventional archer voiced by Kelly Macdonald, who defies her mother Queen Elinor's plans for an arranged marriage and inadvertently casts a spell that transforms Elinor into a bear, forcing mother and daughter to repair their relationship before the spell becomes permanent. It was Pixar's first film centered on a female protagonist and, with Chapman, its first credited with a woman director, before she was removed partway through production and replaced by Andrews. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
