Body and Soul is a 1925 American race film written and directed by Oscar Micheaux, following an escaped convict who poses as a reverend in a small Georgia town and exploits his congregation, committing serious crimes including rape, with the story ultimately revealed as a dream. The film marks the motion picture debut of Paul Robeson, who plays both the false reverend and his honest twin brother. Only three of Micheaux's twenty six silent films are known to survive, and the Library of Congress selected Body and Soul for the National Film Registry in 2019 as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant, recognizing it as a landmark of early African American cinema.
