Beverly Hills Cop is a 1984 American action comedy film directed by Martin Brest from a screenplay by Daniel Petrie Jr. and a story by Danilo Bach and Petrie, starring Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a street smart Detroit detective who travels to Beverly Hills, California to solve the murder of his best friend, with a supporting cast including Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkoff, Jonathan Banks and Paul Reiser. Released theatrically in the United States on December 5, 1984 by Paramount Pictures, it became an immediate blockbuster, received positive reviews, and grossed 316.4 million dollars worldwide, making it the highest grossing film released in the United States in 1984, propelling Murphy to international stardom and spawning a franchise with three sequels beginning in 1987. In December 2024 the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
