Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a 1925 American silent epic directed by Fred Niblo, starring Ramon Novarro as a Jewish prince betrayed into slavery in Roman-occupied Judea, adapted from Lew Wallace's novel of the same name. The film is best known for its elaborately staged chariot race sequence, filmed with a large cast of extras and stunt performers, and it was among the most expensive productions of the silent era. Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is widely regarded as a landmark of large-scale silent-era historical epic filmmaking, and it was later remade as a sound film in 1959.
