Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 dramatization of the 1905 naval mutiny, the defining demonstration of Soviet montage: the Odessa Steps sequence, a massacre built entirely in the collision of shots, is among the most imitated and quoted passages in cinema. It regularly stands near the top of critics' polls of the greatest films ever made.
