Barefoot Gen is a manga created by Keiji Nakazawa, first serialized in Japan beginning in 1973, drawing on Nakazawa's own childhood experience surviving the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a six year old boy. The story follows a boy named Gen Nakaoka and his family through the bombing and its aftermath, depicting the physical devastation, radiation sickness and social hardship survivors faced in unusually direct and graphic detail for the medium at the time. It became one of the earliest and most widely translated graphic narratives to address the atomic bombings directly, and was adapted into two animated feature films in 1983 and 1986.
