American Born Chinese is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Gene Luen Yang, published in 2006 by First Second Books. It interweaves three narratives, a retelling of the Monkey King legend, a Chinese American boy's struggle with his identity, and a teenager embarrassed by a cousin who embodies racial stereotypes, using their eventual convergence to examine belonging and cultural acceptance. It won the 2007 Michael L. Printz Award and the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album, New, and was a finalist for the National Book Award, becoming one of the first graphic novels to receive major mainstream literary recognition.
