Grave of the Fireflies is a 1988 Japanese animated film written and directed by Isao Takahata, adapted from Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical short story, following a teenage boy and his young sister struggling to survive in Japan during the final months of the Second World War after their mother is killed in a firebombing raid. Released as part of a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro through Studio Ghibli, the film's unflinching depiction of wartime civilian suffering set it apart from typical animated features of its time. Grave of the Fireflies is widely regarded as one of the most emotionally powerful animated war films ever made and is frequently cited in discussions of animation's capacity for serious dramatic subject matter.
