Georges Melies's 1902 fantasy, remembered for the rocket landing in the eye of the Man in the Moon, one of the most famous images in cinema. At around fourteen minutes it was among the longest and most elaborate films yet made, and it established the movies as a home for spectacle and imagination rather than only recorded actuality.
