The Flintstones is an animated television sitcom created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera at Hanna-Barbera Productions, premiering on September 30, 1960, and set in the prehistoric town of Bedrock, where a Stone Age family led by Fred and Wilma Flintstone lives a suburban American lifestyle built from anachronistic, stone age versions of modern conveniences, alongside neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble. It was the first animated series broadcast in American prime time and the first animated sitcom, and it went on to become, for decades, the most commercially successful and longest running network animated series in American television history until later shows surpassed it. In a 2013 ranking, TV Guide placed it second only to The Simpsons among the greatest television cartoons ever made.
