The Shining is a 1980 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, loosely adapted from Stephen King's 1977 novel, following Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, who takes a winter caretaker job at the isolated, possibly haunted Overlook Hotel with his wife Wendy, played by Shelley Duvall, and psychically gifted young son Danny, and gradually descends into violent madness as the hotel's influence grows. Kubrick's meticulous, unsettling visual style, including its use of Steadicam tracking shots through the hotel's corridors, and Nicholson's performance became one of the most widely referenced and imitated in horror cinema, despite King's own public dissatisfaction with the adaptation. It is now widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made.
