Dallas is an American primetime soap opera that aired on CBS from 1978 to 1991, centered on the wealthy, feuding Ewing family and their oil business in and around Dallas, Texas. The series became an international television phenomenon, and its second-season finale cliffhanger, in which the character J.R. Ewing is shot by an unseen assailant, generated the widely referenced catchphrase Who shot J.R.? and drew one of the largest television audiences ever recorded at the time. Dallas is widely regarded as the defining example of the primetime television soap opera genre and a major influence on the many prime time soaps that followed it.
