The Simpsons (TV series)

Television Programming Landmarks

The Simpsons is an animated sitcom created by Matt Groening that premiered on the Fox Broadcasting Company on December 17, 1989, following the daily lives of a working-class American family in the fictional town of Springfield. It is the longest-running American animated series, the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running American scripted primetime series by both seasons and episodes, and its debut is widely credited with changing the direction of American television comedy and inspiring the wave of adult-oriented animated sitcoms that followed. The show has been called, by more than one linguist, a source of idioms and catchphrases in American culture rivaling Shakespeare and the Bible, and it has won 37 Primetime Emmy Awards along with two Peabody Awards, with its earliest seasons especially remembered as a creative golden age.
