The Dick Van Dyke Show

Television Programming Landmarks

The Dick Van Dyke Show is an American situation comedy created by Carl Reiner that ran from 1961 to 1966, starring Dick Van Dyke as Rob Petrie, the head writer of a fictional television variety show, alongside Mary Tyler Moore as his wife Laura. The series alternated between Rob's workplace scenes with his fellow writers and his suburban home life, a structural device that let it draw comedy from both show business satire and domestic situation comedy in the same episode. Praised for its sharp writing and Van Dyke's physical comedy, it won numerous Emmy Awards during its run and is widely cited by television historians as an influential model for the modern workplace centered sitcom.
