The Andy Griffith Show

Television Programming Landmarks

The Andy Griffith Show is an American sitcom that aired on CBS from October 3, 1960, to April 1, 1968, across 249 half hour episodes, the first 159 in black and white and the rest in color, created by Sheldon Leonard after Andy Griffith's character was introduced in an episode of The Danny Thomas Show. Andy Griffith stars as Andy Taylor, the widowed sheriff of the fictional small town of Mayberry, North Carolina, alongside Don Knotts as his cousin and deputy Barney Fife, Frances Bavier as his aunt and housekeeper Bee Taylor, and Ron Howard as his young son Opie. The series never fell below seventh place in the Nielsen ratings during its run and ended its final season ranked number one, a feat matched among American sitcoms only by I Love Lucy and Seinfeld.
