Ultraman is a Japanese tokusatsu television series created by Eiji Tsuburaya that premiered in 1966, following a member of a fictional Science Patrol who merges with a giant alien being to become a superhero who battles giant monsters, known as kaiju, threatening Earth. Produced using the practical special-effects techniques, including actors in suits filmed against miniature sets, that Tsuburaya had earlier developed for the Godzilla films, it launched an extensive and long-running Ultraman media franchise of further television series and films. The program is widely credited with helping establish and popularize the tokusatsu genre of live-action special-effects production internationally, particularly across Japan and East Asia.
