Battlestar Galactica

Television Programming Landmarks

Battlestar Galactica is an American science fiction television series developed by Ronald D. Moore, re-imagining Glen A. Larson's 1978 series of the same name, that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel from 2003 to 2009. It follows roughly fifty thousand human survivors of a devastating android Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies as they flee in a ragtag fleet led by Commander William Adama and President Laura Roslin in search of the legendary thirteenth colony, Earth, while pursued by their Cylon enemies. The series won a Peabody Award, was named to Time magazine's list of the 100 greatest television shows of all time, and was included in The New York Times' list of the twenty best television dramas since The Sopranos, earning recognition as a landmark of post-9/11 science fiction that used its premise for sustained political and philosophical storytelling rather than genre spectacle alone.
