The Wire is an American crime drama television series created by David Simon that aired on HBO from 2002 to 2008, set in Baltimore and structured so that each of its five seasons examines a different institution, including the drug trade, the port system, city government, public schools and the news media, in relation to the same recurring cast of police officers, criminals and officials. The series drew on Simon's own background as a Baltimore Sun crime reporter and was produced with an unusually dense, slow-building narrative structure that received modest ratings during its original broadcast but drew increasing critical attention over time. The Wire is widely regarded by television critics as one of the greatest and most sociologically ambitious dramas ever produced for television.
