The Cosby Show is an American sitcom starring Bill Cosby that aired on NBC from 1984 to 1992, centered on the Huxtable family, an upper-middle-class Black family living in Brooklyn, New York, headed by an obstetrician father and an attorney mother. The series was credited at the time with commercially reviving the network sitcom format after a period of declining ratings for the genre, and with presenting a prosperous, professional Black family to a mass American television audience in a way few earlier series had attempted. The Cosby Show's legacy has since been substantially complicated by Bill Cosby's later convictions for sexual assault, and its historical reception is now widely discussed alongside that later record.
