American Idol is an American singing competition series that premiered on Fox in 2002, adapted from the British format Pop Idol, in which aspiring singers compete over a season of auditions and eliminations, judged by a panel and by viewer voting, for a recording contract and a launch into the music industry. It became one of the highest-rated television programs in the United States during the 2000s and helped launch the recording careers of a number of its winners and contestants, and its format was licensed for local versions produced in many other countries.
