The Sopranos

Television Programming Landmarks

The Sopranos is an American television drama created by David Chase that premiered on HBO in 1999, following New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano as he balances managing a criminal organization with the pressures of his suburban family life, portrayed partly through sessions with a psychiatrist. The series combined sustained novelistic storytelling across long seasons with morally ambiguous, psychologically complex characters, an approach widely credited with helping establish the modern prestige television drama as a form taken as seriously as film. The Sopranos received numerous Emmy and Peabody awards during its run and is frequently cited by critics and television historians as one of the most influential television series ever produced.
