An optical disc video and data format offering far greater storage capacity than a compact disc on the same physical disc size. A consortium of Sony, Panasonic, Philips and Toshiba developed it; it launched in Japan on 1 November 1996 and reached the United States on 24 March 1997, and it went on to displace the VHS cassette as the dominant home video format.
