Variety is a 1925 German silent film directed by Ewald Andre Dupont, following a former trapeze artist turned carnival operator who becomes the manager and lover of a beautiful dancer he recruits for a new aerial act at Berlin's Wintergarten theatre, a triangle that ends in tragedy. The film is celebrated for cinematographer Karl Freund's innovative, highly mobile camerawork, which conveyed the dancers' vertiginous trapeze work directly through the camera's own movement. It ranked among the hundred most important German films in a 1994 critical survey and influenced later filmmakers, including director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who credited an early viewing of it as formative to his own career.
