Un Chien Andalou

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Un Chien Andalou is a 1929 French silent short film directed by Luis Buñuel and co-written with Salvador Dalí, built from a sequence of dreamlike, deliberately illogical images rather than a conventional narrative, most notoriously an opening shot in which a woman's eye appears to be sliced open with a razor. Buñuel and Dalí devised the film's images specifically to resist rational interpretation, drawing on their involvement with the Surrealist movement then centered in Paris, and the film became one of the movement's defining cinematic statements. Its premiere screening, attended by prominent Surrealists including Andre Breton, helped establish Buñuel as a major filmmaker, and the short remains widely studied as one of the first and most influential works of Surrealist cinema.

FAQs

Where did the images in Un Chien Andalou come from?

It was built from a dream of Buñuel's and a dream of Dalí's.

The film grew out of two dreams. Luis Buñuel told Salvador Dalí about a dream in which a cloud sliced the moon in half like a razor blade slicing through an eye, and Dalí answered that he had dreamed about a hand crawling with ants. Buñuel declared that this was the film, and the two decided to write a script based on the concept of repressed emotions.
