The Situation Room (photograph)

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

The Situation Room is a photograph taken by chief White House photographer Pete Souza on May 1, 2011, showing President Barack Obama and his national security team in the White House Situation Room as they monitored Operation Neptune Spear, the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan. CNN described it as a photo for the ages, and it has been extensively analyzed for what it captures: the tense, real-time reactions of top officials including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, watching an operation whose outcome was not yet known, and a strikingly diverse group of men and women sharing a moment of high-stakes decision making. It quickly became one of the most reproduced and discussed presidential photographs in American history, an image widely treated as an instant historical document even before the operation's outcome had been publicly confirmed.
