October: Ten Days That Shook the World is a 1928 Soviet film directed by Sergei Eisenstein and Grigori Aleksandrov, commissioned for the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution to dramatize events from the February Revolution through the Bolshevik seizure of the Winter Palace. Eisenstein used the film to extend his theory of intellectual montage, most famously juxtaposing religious icons from several traditions with military regalia to suggest a link between organized religion and state patriotism. Though film historians consider it less successful in the Soviet Union than Eisenstein's earlier Battleship Potemkin, its staged recreation of the storming of the Winter Palace became, for lack of surviving documentary footage of the actual event, the image most people associate with that night.
