Metropolis

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Fritz Lang's 1927 German science fiction epic, a towering vertical city divided between the machine-worked underground and the pleasure gardens above, built around the workers' revolt led by Maria and her mechanical double. Its special effects, engineered by Eugen Schufftan using mirrors to place miniature sets inside live-action frames, gave the young genre of science fiction cinema its most influential visual vocabulary. Heavily cut on release and thought largely lost for decades, a damaged, nearly complete print found in Buenos Aires in 2008 restored most of Lang's original structure.

FAQs

Was Metropolis really lost for decades and how was it recovered?

A nearly complete 147-minute print turned up in Buenos Aires in 2008 and was restored in Germany.

Fritz Lang's original 1927 release print was long considered lost for good. In 2008 a deteriorated but nearly complete print that ran 147 minutes was found in the archives of a museum of cinema in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After several months of restoration in Germany, the reconstructed film had its first showing at the Berlin International Film Festival. Earlier home versions had been much shorter, such as an 87-minute print released in 1984 with a rock sound track by Giorgio Moroder.
