Hearts and Minds is a 1974 American documentary film directed by Peter Davis, examining the Vietnam War and American involvement in it through interviews with military leaders, government officials, veterans and Vietnamese civilians alongside footage of the war itself. Its title comes from a remark by President Lyndon B. Johnson that victory would depend on the hearts and minds of the people fighting the war. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and was later added to the National Film Registry, and it provoked polarized reactions on release, praised by some critics as a landmark of political filmmaking and condemned by others as one sided; filmmaker Michael Moore has credited it as the film that made him want to become a documentarian.

Why was the Academy Awards ceremony of 1975 controversial for Hearts and Minds
Producer Bert Schneider read a telegram from the North Vietnamese delegation at the 1975 ceremony and the Academy publicly disowned the remarks.
When Hearts and Minds won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, producer Bert Schneider accepted the award and read aloud a telegram from the North Vietnamese delegation to the Paris peace talks, thanking the American antiwar movement for what it had done on behalf of peace. Frank Sinatra then took the stage to read a message on behalf of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences saying that it was not responsible for any political utterances on the program and was sorry that the speech had taken place.
