Attack on Titan, known in Japan as Shingeki no Kyojin, is a Japanese manga and anime franchise created by Hajime Isayama, serialized from 2009 to 2021, set in a world where the last remnants of humanity live behind massive walls to shelter from giant humanoid creatures called Titans, and following soldier Eren Yeager after his home town is breached and his mother killed in the story's opening. Its collected manga volumes have sold more than 140 million copies worldwide, and its anime adaptation, which began airing in 2013 and continued in installments through 2023 under the studios Wit Studio and MAPPA, brought the franchise a large international audience, driven in part by its willingness to kill major characters and by plot twists that steadily reframed the nature and origin of the Titans and the walled society itself. The franchise has produced theatrical film compilations, stage plays, novels and video games, and it is widely regarded as one of the most commercially and critically successful manga and anime franchises of the 2010s.
