Moving Image

Home video is the medium through which film and television content is distributed for private viewing in the home, rather than in a cinema or over a broadcast schedule. It grew out of videotape recording technology first used by television broadcasters in the 1950s, becoming a consumer medium once the videocassette recorder reached households in the 1970s and 1980s. Two competing videocassette formats, JVC's VHS and Sony's Betamax, contended for the consumer market, and VHS ultimately prevailed. Because early VCRs and cassettes were expensive, a rental industry emerged, letting viewers borrow equipment and tapes rather than buy them outright, and chains such as Blockbuster later made video rental a fixture of everyday entertainment. Home video let audiences watch complete, unedited films on their own televisions with full playback control, including pausing and rewinding, and it became a major additional source of revenue for the film industry, reshaping how studios budgeted and released their pictures. Videocassettes were eventually succeeded by digital formats such as the DVD, and later by digital downloading and streaming, but the underlying medium, home viewing of previously produced film and television content, remains central to how audiences experience media today.
