The Guardian is a British daily newspaper founded in Manchester in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian, publishing its first edition on 5 May 1821 as a weekly costing seven pennies. Its editorial staff moved to London in 1964, and the paper adopted its present name, The Guardian, in 1959 as it grew into a national publication. It is generally regarded as one of the United Kingdom leading newspapers, known particularly for investigative and campaigning journalism.
