British Board of Film Classification

Also Known As BBFC
Regulatory Bodies

The British Board of Film Classification, BBFC, is a non-governmental organization founded by the British film industry in 1912 as the British Board of Film Censors, formed by film trade associations that preferred to regulate their own content rather than submit to national or local government censorship. Its formation followed controversy over the October 1912 release of the film From the Manger to the Cross, which dramatized the life of Jesus. The board took its current name in the 1980s and remains responsible for the classification of films and video works shown in British cinemas and released on video.
