The American Film Institute, AFI, was founded on 5 June 1967 under a mandate announced two years earlier by President Lyndon B. Johnson in the White House Rose Garden, establishing a national organization to preserve and advance American film heritage. Its founding was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Ford Foundation, and its original 22 member board of trustees included Gregory Peck as chairman, Sidney Poitier as vice chairman, and director Francis Ford Coppola; its founding director was George Stevens Jr.
