How to Train Your Dragon is a media franchise that began with a series of children's books by British author Cressida Cowell, later adapted by DreamWorks Animation into a film trilogy released in 2010, 2014 and 2019, followed by a live-action remake in 2025 with a sequel scheduled for 2027. The franchise follows Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, a young Viking on the island of Berk who is initially dismissed as a clumsy misfit but becomes a respected dragon expert alongside Toothless, a rare Night Fury dragon who becomes his closest companion and flying mount. Together with his friends, Hiccup manages Berk's alliance with its dragon population and is eventually forced into difficult choices to secure lasting peace between people and dragons, a story its director has described as spanning Hiccup's coming of age across roughly six years.
