The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is an American media franchise based on the young adult dystopian novel trilogy written by Suzanne Collins and published between 2008 and 2010, set in the nation of Panem, where a totalitarian government forces children from its impoverished districts to fight to the death in a televised annual event. Lionsgate adapted the trilogy into a four film series released between 2012 and 2015, splitting the final novel, Mockingjay, into two films, with Jennifer Lawrence starring as the trilogy's narrator and protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, and the films together grossed close to three billion dollars worldwide. Collins later published two further novels, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2020 and Sunrise on the Reaping in 2025, both adapted for film as prequels set decades before the original trilogy, and the franchise's central image, a televised survival competition staged as mass entertainment, has been widely discussed as commentary on reality television and economic inequality.
