Winnie-the-Pooh is a media franchise built around the fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear created by English author A. A. Milne and illustrator E. H. Shepard. The character first appeared by name in a children's story commissioned by London's Evening News for Christmas Eve 1925, inspired by a stuffed toy Milne had bought for his son Christopher Robin at Harrods and by a bear named Winnie the pair had seen at London Zoo. The original stories and poems have since been adapted into numerous animated films, television series, stage productions, video games and an extensive range of merchandise, most prominently through the Walt Disney Company's licensed adaptations beginning in the 1960s.
