The Ballad of Narayama (1983 film)

The Ballad of Narayama is a 1983 Japanese film directed by Shohei Imamura. Set in a nineteenth century mountain village that practices ubasute, the custom of carrying the elderly to a remote peak to die once they turn seventy, it follows Orin, a sixty-nine-year-old woman in good health who resolves to accept the tradition and spends her final year settling her family and village affairs. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival.
