Ran is a 1985 Japanese epic film directed by Akira Kurosawa, a co-production with France that transposes the Shakespeare play King Lear to sixteenth-century Japan. It follows the aging warlord Hidetora Ichimonji, who divides his domain among his three sons and is betrayed by the two eldest, driving him into exile and madness. The film earned Kurosawa his only Academy Award nomination for Best Director and won the Oscar for Best Costume Design, and it is widely regarded as one of his late masterworks.
