Not One Less

Not One Less is a 1999 Chinese drama directed by Zhang Yimou. It follows Wei Minzhi, a thirteen year old substitute teacher in rural China who is told not to lose a single student while filling in for a village teacher for one month, and who travels to the city to retrieve a boy who has left to seek work after he does exactly that. Filmed in a neorealist documentary style with non-professional actors playing characters matching their own names and occupations, the film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival after being excluded from the official competition at Cannes.
