A City of Sadness

A City of Sadness is a 1989 Taiwanese historical drama directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and is widely considered his masterpiece. It follows the Lin family in the port city of Keelung through the years after Japan's 1945 surrender and the 1947 February 28 Incident, centering on the deaf fourth son Wen-ching and his relationship with a nurse named Hinomi as the family is caught up in political upheaval and Kuomintang repression. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was named one of the ten greatest films ever made in the British Film Institute's 2012 Sight and Sound critics' poll.
