Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

StarCraft is a 1998 real-time strategy video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, built around three asymmetric factions, the Terran, Zerg and Protoss, each with distinct units and strategies. The game became an especially large commercial and competitive phenomenon in South Korea, where nationally televised professional matches and leagues developed around it. StarCraft is widely regarded as a landmark of the real-time strategy genre and is widely credited as foundational to the modern professional esports industry.
