Pokemon Red and Blue

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Pokemon Red and Blue are 1996 role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy, the first installments of the Pokemon video game series, in which players explore a fictional region capturing and training creatures called Pokemon to battle and trade with other players. The two versions were designed to be played and traded between using a link cable, with each version containing some creatures unavailable in the other, a mechanic built specifically to encourage social play between owners of the two games. Pokemon Red and Blue sold well over ten million copies combined and launched what became one of the highest-grossing media franchises in the world, and the games are widely regarded among the most influential handheld video games ever released.
