Dark Souls is a 2011 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, released as a spiritual successor to the studio's 2009 game Demon's Souls. Set in the decaying kingdom of Lordran, it sends a player character cursed as an Undead through a tightly interconnected, non-linear world in search of a way to either sustain or end an ancient age of fire, offering minimal explicit narration and instead scattering its story across item descriptions and environmental detail. The game became widely known for its unforgiving difficulty and its bonfire checkpoint system, which resets nearby enemies whenever a player rests, and its influence gave rise to an entire subgenre of games commonly described by critics and players as Souls-like.
